7th Largest Nation by Population – Decentralizing Food to Small Communities

It’s not often, that a senior official of a government, goes to a very small community to inspect cabbages ready for harvest. But this is what is going on in the Philippines, a nation of 110 million people, who are turning to urban farming and sustainable community gardens. Under a national program, households and communities will be urged to produce fruits and vegetables for their backyards and other vacant community spaces.

The smallest community organizations in the Philippines are called barangays. Interesting that the barangay that the Philippine federal official visited was called Barangay Holy Spirit.
