News about Tonganoxie, Kansas is not really headline material. But maybe it should be. Tyson Foods – one of the world’s largest meat processors wanted to build a $320 million chicken slaughterhouse near Tonganoxie, Kansas. The facility was to process 1.25 million birds a week and create 1,600 jobs. Within weeks, the community galvanized against the project. Over half the citizens stepped forward to challenge the plan due to risks to local water and other environmental hazards. Even the famed Erin Brockovich showed up in support. This kind of community solidarity reminds us of what a community should be. As of today, Tyson is backing off and looking for another location.
