Farm Animals in the City – Chicago has almost no rules

Touch the Soil News #935 (Feature photo – Backyard Chickens – CCA SA 2.0) While it is illegal to process animals for meat in Chicago neighborhoods, there is no limit on having farm animals for other purposes – eggs, milk, bees for honey, pets, etc. Animals can include rabbits, chickens, ducks and goats. Chicago is the only major city in the U.S. that has never passed laws to limit farm animals in the city. In many cities, however, urban farmers have pushed for changes in the law to allow chickens and other small farm animals with some limited success. Urban Farm Animals – Another City Tackles the Issue

Touch the Soil News #297 On the edge of the Denver metro (3 million people) is the small town of Edgewater. Edgewater recently passed an ordinance that allows up to six regulated animals for folks living in detached homes. These regulated animals include: Chickens Ducks Rabbits Miniature goats One beehive After decades of cities passing ordinances to exclude farm animals, the trend is reversing for new ordinnces that allow farm animals in the city. Licensing and compliance will be required for all regulated animals and the slaughter of animals for food is prohibited. Come to find out, not everyone was happy.
