Successful Farming news brings us a story of something that simply should not be happening. Iowa, which is one of the nation’s largest hog production states, just authorized $24 million to help farmers cover the costs of hogs they could not send to the processors who closed their doors. Unable to feed or maintain the hogs – they just had to destroy them all. A wasteful destruction of life and food.
Iowa is paying farmers $40 for every hog lost. That means the $24 million dollars cover the lives of 600,000 hogs that weighed at least 225 lbs. National estimates are that Covid 19 will result in the wasteful destruction of 10 million pigs – almost 10 percent of the U.S. annual hog production. You can read the full story here:
