Allotment gardens are of European descent. In the past, governments often times made plots available for the citizenry to grow food. The plots were generally much larger than a community garden plot in the U.S. European allotment gardens are often large enough to have a shed or even a modest summer home.
Allotment gardening is taking root among millennials in Germany, where the average age of an allotment holder has dropped five years since 2011. In Berlin, Germany, there are almost 12,000 would-be-gardeners on waiting lists for an allotment garden.
