Cutting down the use of plastic bags in England started three years ago when a five pence (about 6.5 cents) charge was applied to plastic grocery bags. According to a report by Energy Live News, the small charge has curtailed the use of plastic bags in grocery stores by a stunning 86 percent. The drop has equated to an annual reduction of 300 million bags. The reduction in plastic bag use has resulted in an estimated 50 percent reduction in plastic bag marine pollution.
