While the Chinese produce over 20 million electric bikes a year, what is going on here in the U.S.? The news site Bicycle Retailer recently reported that some 1,500 to 2,000 bike dealers sell e-bikes. That’s around 50 percent of the 3,900 bike dealers in the U.S. In early studies, it is estimated that 2/3 of e-bike trips replaced car travel. As of mid-2017, the NPD group reports that U.S. e-bike sales reached almost $65 million for the preceding 12 months. Electric bike sales have nearly tripled over the previous 36 months. Sales of U.S. e-bikes may well push over 500,000 units in 2018. What are your feelings about buying an e-bike?
