Modern Palm-Oil Consumerism

Touch the Soil News #1537 (Feature photo – Caraga Region – CCA Sa 2.0 2il.org)

The Caraga region of the Philippines is one of the last ecological frontiers of the Philippines. It has been identified as home to 12 key biodiversity areas by the nation’s Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.

In a story that should be followed in all schools, this environmentally sensitive area has just been approved for the development of a 125,000 acre palm-oil farm. Plans are to ultimately expand the farm to 500,000 acres. That is equivalent to a farm 10 miles wide and almost 80 miles long. You can read more of the story here: https://www.farmlandgrab.org/post/view/29398-50-000-hectare-palm-oil-plantation-to-be-developed-in-caraga-region
