No Student Goes Hungry

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is proposing legislation called “No Student Goes Hungry.” What does it say about the economic system when laws must be passed to take up the slack on things that economics should do? The recent proposal by Cuomo includes things like:

  1. No lunch shaming – targets practices that call out or punish students who can’t afford school meals
  2. Require breakfast be available after the bell
  3. Expand New York’s Farm-to-School program
  4. Incentivize schools to use locally-farmed products
  5. Require food pantries on all public college campuses – a first in the nation

 

Governor Cuomo’s proposal seems to say a lot about the economic status of households unable to feed large sectors of the nation’s students. You can read the full report here:
