Touch the Soil News #404

Growing your own or buying from a local farmer is certainly “Hip” these days – and for good reason. As mega retailers strive to grow, they automatically create larger and larger back-end suppliers. Anymore, when there is a food safety problem it can quickly escalate to a multi-state issue.

This CVS pharmacy store also sells groceries. It is competing successfully against grocery-only chains. CVS, is the No. 5 grocery retailer in the U.S. with the largest number of storefronts at 7,911, with over 50 percent more storefronts than Walmart. Walmart sells almost six times more groceries and consumables than CVS. However other retailers that sell more than just groceries (Target, Costco and Walgreens) are taking a huge chunk of the grocery market.
