As one of the oldest non-profits in the U.S. The United Way still has almost 1,200 affiliated offices throughout the United States.
Historically the organization just asked for money to help other charitable organizations in communities. However, United Way is directly involved in urban farming to raise food for the needy. Going beyond fundraising to directly producing food may be a coming sign of the times for charitable organizations. Many food banks also are getting into food gardening.
Leveraging dollars donated with donations of land and community help to grow food is one of the more efficient ways to alleviated food insecurity.
