Because wheat is a food staple for billions of people, slight kinks in its production and distribution can cause jitters around the globe. India is a nation that normally exports a small amount of wheat. Recently it announced a curtailment of its wheat exports to ensure enough for itself. The amount in question is only a few million metric tonnes, in a world that will produce some 790 million metric tonnes this year.
