In an attempt to restore damaged lands in Africa, one company it looking to plant 1 million hectares (2.5 million) acres into bamboo trees for carbon credits and then for bamboo products. This amount of land would be equivalent to a farm 40 miles wide and 100 miles long.
The many uses for bamboo, means that the bamboo forests will generate revenue far beyond the carbon credits. There is a move underway to grow bamboo in the U.S. Some states regulate bamboo production and being a new crop, markets need development. However, for some it may be worth investigating.
