Pension Fund Manages Over 2 Million Acres of Farmland

Where do five million U.S. college faculty and staff put their retirement savings? With the TIAA, otherwise known as Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America-College Retirement Equities Fund. The TIAA manages over $1.3 trillion in assets which includes 2 million acres of farmland. The TIAA is the world’s largest farmland manager.

The problem is that the TIAA is coming under scrutiny for excesses relating to indigenous people’s rights, water rights and other indiscretions. Faculty from the University of Iowa, are calling the TIAA on the carpet. The 2 million acres that the TIAA manages, is equivalent to farm that is 10 miles wide and roughly 315 miles long.
